**** THIS SPACE FOR RENT **** I seem to be having some problem with my tapes. It's not the tapes, because most of them are TDKs and Maxells, with the few random ones from my unwiser days. Basically, I record something, and all goes well for a while, then strange clicks appear on the tapes, similar to the sound of a bad scratch on a record. These in fact appear to be scratches on the tape(?), because they are still there if I re-record the tape. I suspect it's because I don't clean my heads enough (no flames, please! I'm changing my evil ways!) or I'm just not doing a good job when I do clean it. Could this be the problem, and if not, then what? In any case, what is the best way to clean the heads on my tape deck? Jim Van Verth ..dartvax!dilvish "Philosophers would rather question answers than answer questions"

They sell a separate rubber cleaner (RC-1) which you use to un-sticky the pinch roller. Then you use a head cleaner (HC-1) to clean the capstan and heads. This can be done with about 3 swabs in 1 minute on a cassette deck where things are accessible. The rubber cleaner is particularly important - it conditions the roller and increases its life. It also helps to eliminate flutter caused by tape sticking to the roller. (In extreme cases, a sticky roller will just plain eat your tape!) Steve Falco AT&T Bell Laboratories Whippany NJ

I had a problem with clicking sounds when playing back tapes, an intermittent problem. It was very annoying, with no apparent pattern. A soft click every three or four seconds. Then, once while this was happening, I noticed that the mechanical counter was stuck, and the low-order digit was twitching every time I heard the clicking!! :-) -- Steve Vance {dual, hplabs, intelca, nsc, proper}!qantel!stv dual!qantel!stv@berkeley Qantel Corporation, Hayward, CA
