[net.audio] No, I'm NOT looking for a "Boom Box", dammit...

Marantz Gold PMD 430
                 360
                 340 etc.

These are high-quality portable tape recorders featuring multiple heads, line-
in/line-out, dual record monitors, tape bias settings, Dolby NR & B...i.e. the
works. The top of the line lists for $449.00; next is $329.00; next, $249.00
and so on. The 360 has the features I want, but oh, that price! I'm searching
for the highest quality-to-price ratio (isn't everybody?). Any suggestions?
Also, I'm planning to be in NYC sometime this summer...does Crazy Eddie stock
this sort of thing?

Why not buy mail order? Its at least as reliable as buying from a dealer
while you are on a short visit in a distant city. You are <really>
asking for trouble in that situation. Many mail order (actually, call our
toll-free number to order) outfits are perfectly respectable - well, pretty
respectable (nobody's perfect as everyone used to say when I was on
assignment at headquarters).

You should understand that the actual selling price of those Marantz units
is much less at any kind of discount store. Mail order gives you the lowest
price and the sales tax savings pays the UPS delivery charge (and then some
depending on where you live and where you order).

Also, if you want really good portable stuff and can afford those
Marantz list prices, you ought to buy the design that Marantz copied: i.e.,
Sony. Sony has a professional walkman recorder with dolby B and C for
around $230-250, last I knew. It's the WM-D6C. If you are really serious
there's the ...hmmm, WD-5 (I think). This goes for around $400-450 but is
the end product of a product evolution that took Sony over 10 years. The
Marantz units are variants of Sony designs of 5-7 years back. I have used
all of them but the most expensive and latest Sony. I don't like the
Marantz because of some Kluge features. I own a WM-D6 and like it, but would
prefer the more expensive unit if I could afford it.
