[net.audio] Questions on Rotel, Denon, and Spica

thb@unisoft.UUCP (Tim Bessie) (05/21/85)

I just recently purchased most of a system (sans turntable) from a local
reputable audiophile shop. I'm pretty happy with what I got, but am
wondering if anybody has had any experience with any of this equipment.

Unfortunately, I don't remember most of the model numbers, but most of
the equipment is fairly unique within each company's product line:

	Rotel 40W Integrated Amp
	Rotel Digital tuner
	Denon Tape Deck (Model M22)
	2 Spica speakers (small, triangular-shaped)

If anyone out there has information, thoughts, etc. good or bad on any
of this stuff, please post or mail me about it... I'm interested to see
if I made good choices.

O.K., here goes.

The Spica TC-50s were an excellent choice. I consider them to be one
of the few speakers under $500 a pair that are in the 'audiophile'
class. Their best feature is superb imaging, the best I've heard in
this price range. Placement is critical with this model, they must be
on their stands and out from the wall; try moving them around until
you get the best results. Bass is a bit weak, but Spica is supposed
to make a companion subwoofer. I expect results with the woofer would be
outstanding.

I am not familiar with the Denon M22 specifically, though I did
listen to several Denon models when I was shopping for a cassette
deck. As I recall, they sounded quite good, but were definitely
out-classed by the Nakamichi.

I haven't heard the Rotel. Good luck with your new equipment. Hope
this was helpful - and if you need help selecting a turntable, I'd be
glad to throw my 2 cents in.
