[net.audio] The sound on VH-1

edward@ukma.UUCP (Edward C. Bennett) (05/21/85)

If any of you have cable TV and get the music channel VH-1,
have you noticed their promotion line? Something like "...VH-1, in digital
Dolby stereo...".
To me that sounds a little farfetched. How could they incorperate
digital sound into their signal? I'm sure the videos are recorded in
analog format.

What do you folks think?

I have VH-1, in mono right now until the stereo equipment comes in.

I will have to call the engineer at the Warner uplink site, but I think that
the digital part of the sound is the satellite up/downlink portion. Normally
the sound is FM sub-carriered onto the transponder channel. In tha case of
MTV, the L+R is on one subcarrier and the L-R is on another subcarrier. The
digital sound is to improve the sound (keep out added noise) during satellite
transmission.

The sound is Dolby encoded to help during the FM transmission to your house.
MTV also uses the Dolby FM technique.

That is my guess.
