[net.audio] Looking for a preamp...

marr@yale-com.UUCP (07/06/83)

I`m looking for a CLEAN sounding preamp. A Denon DP-30L turntable and
DR-F6 tape deck will be hitched to it (along with some Philips power amp
that my roommate is bringing up) to give some idea of quality range.
Hafler has been recommended to me, but I haven`t had much of a chance to
do any shopping yet. My concern is for a preamp that will bring the
signal from the turntable (and maybe CD player, though I doubt I`ll get
one soon) to the tape deck whilst introducing the least possible amount
of noise. Gadgets, special features and the like are not a consideration.
Any suggestions that anyone may have about this would be greatly appreciated.

Best buys in preamps, in my book: (alphabetical order)

	1) Bryston 1B
	2) Conrad-Johnson
	3) Naim
	4) Hafler
	5) Threshold

This list is made regardless of price bracket. Any of these units
will give you the maximum for your money, if you can afford it.

These days, I find it hard to imagine a preamp that doesn't sound clean.
I think looking for the quietest preamp you can find is a good thing.
I have a Phase Linear preamp that I really like, sounds fine. The push button
selector is a lot nicer than a rotary switch. Problems:
   1) DIP-sized relays are used for signal switching, but these occasionally
get dirty contacts and I have to open 'em up and clean them.
However, this approach virtually eliminates cross talk.
Ideally, I would like solid state switches (FETs).
   2) The high level amp was kinda noisy, because the volume control came
first. Since I don't listen at full volume, I modified the thing by
adding 20dB of gain in front of the volume control and cutting the
gain of the high level amp (in the feedback circuit) by the same.
This causes reduced volume settings to cut back the noise from
pre-vol-control amp stages. From what I've seen of late,
manufacturers have finally started doing this kind
of thing or putting the vol control in the feedback path.

Consider Nakamichi, from what I've seen of preamp specs, as well as cassette
deck specs, they know a thing or two about building very quiet voltage amps.

I'm nearing the purchase of a preamp, and unless someone talks me out of
it, I think I'll buy a Crown SL-2. Since the sum of my knowledge on preamps
could be contained on a single business card, I'm interested in hearing
opinions on the SL-2 as well as comparable or better preamps. Although I
want to spend only about $500, I'm willing to go a little higher for the
"right" preamp. Please send replies via mail.
							Thanks

Don't buy the Crown preamp. I used to own one, and let me tell you,
when I upgraded to my current preamp (Threshold), it was like pulling
the cotton out of my ears. If you don't mind a preamp with few
features, try the PS Audio Source. It is cheaper than the Crown,
and a far better unit. If you want features, the Tandberg 3008 at
just over $700 is worth the extra money many times over.
