[net.audio] Help! Some diagnostic advice needed

edward@ukma.UUCP (Edward C. Bennett) (05/30/85)

I'm having a peculiar problem with my FM tuner. I have
my cable-TV feed hooked directly to the tuner's antenna terminals
(75 ohm connection) so I can receive FM cable. The problem occurs
when I listen to one particular station. Shortly after tuning to
the station, the left channel output stops and only some occasional
popping sounds come from the speaker. Tuning away from the station
to another and then retuning to the first solves the problem, but
only for a few seconds.
The station I'm trying to receive is non-local and can
only be found on the cable. The audio level from this station
is considerably lower than other (local) stations. (I don't know
how the signal strength compares, my strength meter quit several
years ago.)
Since local stations come in fine and all other sources
(tape, turntable) have no problems the problem must be in the
tuner section.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions about what
could be wrong? Is my receiver just letting me know that it's
sick and dying? (It's about 8 years old)

Just because your receiver is sick doesn't mean its dying unless there
truly are no service shops in your area you would trust.

Sounds to me like it might be a case of front end overload which could be
related to the fact that your meter stopped working. You didn't specify
brand or model of receiver, but many put a signal strength meter in the
Automatic Gain Control loop. Failure of that loop could lead to signal overload.
try moving your antenna around just to be sure its not some weird manifestation
of multipath. If that doesn't fix it I'd strongly consider a trip to the
fixit shop, unless you wanted a new one anyway - in which case this furnishes a good excuse.
