[net.audio] How do you like your CD? One DAC or two?

kinmonth@null.DEC (09/11/84)

Concerning the phase shift between channels on a CD player that uses
only one DAC: Many people have said that there really is no problem
because the time delay could be corrected by moving the lagging speaker
about 1/3 inch closer to you. This explanation satisfied me completely,
but then I think I read somewhere the other day that the amount of
phase shift between the CD channels was frequency dependent. I believe
that the article said that higher frequencies would get more delay than
lower ones. I don't see why this would be so. Also, I can't find the
article (I'm still looking though). Does anyone have comments on this?
Has anyone compared two CD players, one with two DACs and the other with
only one? If so, can you comment on any audible differences that you
would attribute to the number of DACs used.

Of course, that multiplexed device between your ears is perfectly
capable of handling those delays/phase shifts. It's one of the things
that makes human hearing so useful.

I believe that there are audible differences between CD players,
and that the 2 DAC system is better on paper if not audibly.
Since there are 2 DAC players available as inexpensively as those
that do not have 2 DACs why not go for what ever subtle benefit
that 2 DACs might produce.
