Today I called around to see how cheaply the Bryston .5B / Technics SH - 305MC combination can be had. The list prices are 600.00 for the Bryston and 350.00 for the Technics. Japanese Stereo (213)659-8550 has the Technics for 250.00 plus shipping with a one year warranty. Audio Alternatives in Michigan (number has changed-check in back of the latest audio mag.) has had the Bryston listed for 500.00 . So for 750.00 you can have measurably and audibly one of the best preamp combo's around with good construction and solid company backing. It is nice to know that you don't have to go broke to get supperb performance! I hope this information saves someone time, money and/or hastles borrowing over a dozen preamps. Those of you looking at mega-buck preamps should also audition this and the other two suggestions before spending more, you may be pleasantly surprised! For those of you that asked for early info on what looks good in the 1000.00 to 1400.00 price class the early list of excellent units is: Spectral DMC-5 1400.00 Krell PAM-5 1400.00 Threshold FET2/II 1350.00 These units may compare to the 2000.00 to 3000.00 dollar units (the jury is still out). In any case they are all high gain units allowing MM or MC cartridges, are well built and basically sound great! My current favorite in this price range is the Threshold for whatever that is or isn't worth. David S. Mohler AT&T - ISL @ Denver druxu!mohler or drune!mohler Is there life after high end audio???
