[net.audio] magnavox model 1040 CD player advise needed

GOT@psuvm.BITNET (08/07/85)

I would like to know what all you real audio buffs out there think of the
Magnavox 1040 CD player. I saw the 1040 at Service Merchendise for about
$188 bucks and to me that is a bargain. I have heard that the Magnavox
models are actually made by Phillips, is this true?

Since my budget is kind of limited, i do not want to spend over $250
right now. But if anyone has any alternitive suggestions to the Magnavox
that is in my price range, please let me know.

The player itself seemed very sturdy to me, but was light on features.
The salesman told me that there is an audible differance among differant
CD players, and that he would recomend the Sony model that sold for $249
(not an exact figure). Everything that I have read on the Net tells me
that there is almost no audible differance in CD players (on the lower end
of the price scale), so I kind of doubted what he said.

Also if anyone knows of any reviews on the 1040 please let me know.
Feel free to send me mail, or post replys on the Net.

Thanks in advance . Bitnet: GOT@PSUVM

I know nothing of the Magnavox 1040 . . . wish I could have found it near me.

An alternative might be the Pioneer 5010 -- I bought one last Friday for
$249, choosing it over the Technics PL-2 at $288 and the Sony ??-30 for
$289. Don't kill me if those model numbers are wrong.

The Sony wasn't programmable and the Pioneer doesn't show elapsed time. The
Technics had all that, plus index selection (aside: how many disks have
indexes?), but I didn't care for the track display or the size and location
of the buttons as compared to the Pioneer. The Pioneer just seemed to be
more of a precision machine. I particularly like the huge PLAY button.

Experimenting with our REPOST function . . .

(Disclaimer) Though I enjoy and have considerable amounts of stereo I
am not an esoteric audiphilist, I happen to think that you can buy large
market brands that sound just as good and cost less than all this stuff
that the esoterics on the net try to peddle.

I have owned a 1040 for maybe 6 mos. now and since I'm not really too big
on the fancy programming features have been very happy with it. Its error
correction is very good and the sound is excellent (but then I too am in
the camp that most CD players are indistinguishable when personal
prejudices are eliminated). My unit, at least, has been very reliable,
and you can't beat the price. ..True, Magnavox is an american subsidiary
of Philips international.
