Well, I got my CD player (Magnacrock 2020SL) back from North American Phillips again. This time, they told me that they'd call me to pick it up when it was in. Three weeks ago, they said "Friday". Two weeks ago, they said "Friday or Monday" Last Monday, they said "Friday". I called on Friday, they said it wasn't back yet. I called this Monday, they said that it had been shipped UPS last Friday. Right. In any case, it arrived (a 30 mile trip) Wednesday night. I took it out, plugged it in, took out the transit screws, and turned it on. It worked. It continuted to work for roughly an hour, until I turned it off. It still worked this morning, for a few minutes. <I turned it off, it didn't break, as far as I know.> In any case, it seems much healthier than it did the last time they returned it. It's worked without glitching, flashing its lights, or turning itself off and smelling bad. As an aside, it still sounds the same, i.e. it sounds just like it did before, WHEN it worked. This is both unsuprising and a non-complaint. As another aside, the panel lights I never knew I had (never saw them before) work quite nicely, and light up all the various function indicators. Now I can play CD's in the dark. The repair ticket said, " Re-soldiered connections to power supply board. Replaced microprocessor, decoder, and pre-amp. Removed sockets on <two chips> and soldiered directly. Tested for function and performance." My guess is that the power supply connections are the real key, folks... This time, the player wasn't handled at the local NAP depot, it was shipped to another place that is set up to handle CD's. I suspect that it might have been better had that happened the first time, but what can I say from a one-sample sample? Finally. I can listen to the Phillip Jones Brass play the "Waltz from Sleeping Beauty" on Tubas again! -- SUPPORT SECULAR TEDDY-BEAR-ISM. "You, who are on the road, must have a code that you can live by."
