I am considering buying a new stereo (receiver/amplifier combo) -- pref- erably for about $200, though I might be talked into paying up to $300. Some people have recommended various models in the Sony STR-x60 (or STR- AVx60?) series -- such as the "460", available in one store for $210. For what it may be worth, the June '85 Stereo Review liked the "760", and the September '85 Consumer Reports liked the "260". (Please, no generic Consumer Reports flames.) I have looked at some of these Sonys in some stores, and they appear to have a good set of features as far as I can tell. The front-panel layout appeals to me (though, of course, I don't want to judge a book by its cover). Any comments on these units -- or on Sony stereos in general? -- Rich Wales // UCLA Computer Science Department // +1 213-825-5683 3531 Boelter Hall // Los Angeles, California 90024 // USA ARPA: wales@LOCUS.UCLA.EDU -or- wales@UCLA-LOCUS.ARPA UUCP: ...!(ucbvax,ihnp4)!ucla-cs!wales

[] Several months ago, both '84 and /85 models were available. I recommended the '84 model to one family. the '85 had (if I recall right) maybe 10 watts more of advertised power, but it sacrificed several AM/FM presets for questionabl (and gaudy) TV features. The older unit was about $10 cheaper at mail order (actually 1-800-order) houses. -- "It's the thought, if any, that counts!" Dick Grantges hound!rfg
