Well, I guess I'll have to post this.... >Here is $800 dollars, it is yours to spend. > >Purchase a system consisting of tape/amp/phono/speakers that you could >be reasonably happy with (golden ears people can buy some speaker cable >instead). > >By the way, let me know what you bought, otherwise this would be a bit >pointless wouldn't it? > -Mark > ~cbosgd!osu-eddie!mwf *** Thanks! (Gee, what a nice guy.) Ok, here's what I bought: Power amp: Mitsubishi 150 watt power amp, a buck a watt. (used) Pre amp: Nakamichi 210 preamp. (Very clean, but not much in the way of tone controls. You have to get good flat stuff for the rest of the componants to take advantage of it.) About $200 (used) Turntable: Technics 'close and play' linear tracking turntable. $175 (used -- methinks we're establishing a pattern here.) Tuner, Cassette: Ok, here's where you might get put off: One of the Sony FM/Sterio Recorder walkman units. As good as a lot of home units, and you can port it. About $60 if you want to wait in line all saturday afternoon at 'The Good Guys'. (New. Try and find one used.) Speakers: Oh, one of the minature units, like ADC started and everyone else is making now. You know, great tweeter, pretty good midrange, but the bass speaker has been left out. You can always add a Cerwin Vega subwoofer from DAK. Speakers: $57 Subwoofer: $150 Oops, DAK is selling the speakers for $49. There. 16 dollars left over, so I bought myself a couple of albums. You didn't say anything about CD, but I think I'd rather have that these days than the turntable. Haven't bought any new records in a long time. Anyway, Emerson CD-150, $179. Or Sony D5, $200 mail order. The last puts you nine bucks over your goal. Direct experiance: All componants except the turntable/cd. But I've had my eye on all of those. Come to think of it, I'll probably buy both turntable and CD, just to be downward compatable. My 'real' speakers are Gales, left over from my audiophile days. But I bought a pair of those little guys for the Van, and discovered they sounded pretty good at home as well. Just missing bass response. Anyway, I buy used whenever possible. Why buy braces for some salesman's children? Find a good used Hi-Fi store and be familiar with a lot of different brand names. (Back issues of audio magazines?) Then wait. Haunt the store. Eventually a deal will come through that'll be sweet to your ear and not too rough on your bank account. Another thing: Those all-in-one sterio systems (speakers, turntable, cd, tuner, tape duplicator, One Step Martinizer and food processor) are for suckers. They're built to sell, not listen to.
