[net.audio] final preamp comparison

mohler@drune.UUCP (MohlerDS) (09/09/85)

As previously promised, I plan on sumarizing my findings of a
solid-state preamp comparison. My original goal was to find any
true perfectionist preamps in the under 1300.00 price range.

First, there are some units with good credentials that I cannot
obtain to test:
1) Robertson Audio's preamp
2) Sumuiko Taslisman (sp?) preamp
3) The updated (and supposedly awesome) Superphon Revelation basic preamp
Any measurements or opinions as to their quality would be apreciated.

Second, I found a 1400.00 dollar preamp with specs. and sound that will
rival any preamp that I have heard (or heard of). Depending on your preferences
you may find it the equal or close to the Spectral DMC-10 Gamma, Klyne SK-5,
and MLAS (Levinson) ML-6B, ML-7B. It is the new Spectral DMC-5! It is basically
identical to the DMC-10 Gamma except for the power supply, which is inboard and
slightly less substantial than the external one on the DMC-10 Gamma.

Third, as previously mentioned the Bryston 1B and .5B are price/performance
leaders as is the Threshold FET2/II. I must mention that the ARC SP-7
preamp has been found by several people (including myself) to be variable
in manufactured quality and performance (both audible and measurable).
