[net.audio] CD quality query

asente@Cascade.ARPA (09/21/85)

Is there a magazine/book/whatever where I can find out the answer to
"What's the quality of CD xyz like?" I've heard enough stories of
terrible transfers that I'm a little wary about putting out $12 for an
unknown quality recording.

Specifically, at the moment, I'd be interested in hearing opinions/
recommendations for any of the following discs:

	Laurie Anderson Big Science
	Peter Gabriel Security
Talking Heads Speaking in Tongues (is this the record
					mix or the cassette mix?)

Also, I'm interested in recommendations for Beethoven Symphonies, both for
performance and for recording quality. Any experience with Marriner's 3rd
with St. Martin, on Phillips? Finally, are there any CD versions of these
operas which are good quality: Salome, La Boheme, Don Giovanni, Der
Rosenkavalier? Actually, buying opera on CD is often cost effective since
there are frequently fewer discs than records.

Thanks,
