Does anyone have a recommendation for a great contact cleaner and
lubricant? I have used a degreasing cleaner (1,1,1 trichloroethane?)
on my input selector switch on my preamp. This only works for a short
while and then it's back to a crackling left channel. My balance pot
produces some noise when rotated but I've learned my lesson about
using a degreasing cleaner on pots. (gee, this pot used to rotate so
smoothly) If anyone knows of a product that is effective for a long
period of time I'd sure like to here from you.

One is a cleaner, the other is a preservative. You can get the stuff as a spray or as a liquid. The liquid can be thinned in freon, then the whole part can be dunked. The stuff makes a good soldering flux too. I don't know where to get the spray (somebody here ordered it through purchasing) but the liquid is available in small quantities from Old Colony Sound Lab (part of the Audio Amateur magazine). It isn't cheap - probably $15 for a small bottle of each - but it goes a long way. Steve Falco AT&T Bell Laboratories Whippany NJ

I have heard good things about a contact cleaner called cramalon (I really don't know about the spelling but it sounds that way). ---------- Tony Nowicki ARPA: nowicki@uiucdcsb.CS.UIUC.EDU U. of Illinois, Urbana UUCP: {decvax, ihnp4}!uiucdcs!nowicki Department of C.S., AI Lab. There is also a fluid called Tweak (Put out by Sumiko, I believe) which increases the contact of connectors. E. Muroga

A good contact cleaner should contain some contact lubricant along with the cleaning agent. Running a piece of lens cleaning paper over the contacts before cleaning may also help. If the contacts once had a special metal plating and it is gone, forget it, get a new switch. -- You are Beautiful, Dick Rickert my manufactured love;- AT&T CPL but it is only Svengali, Indy, IN talking to himself again. I've used cramolin for several years for all sorts of electrical contacts. It comes as a concentrate and is frequently diluted with freon or alchohol. For contacts, it is the best fix for intermittents and oxidation removal I've seen. At the broadcast facility where I worked, SOP was to cramolin the connectors on any card removed from any piece of equipment. I believe that many service problems were eliminated by this simple preventative measure. I have never seen it in spray form so using in pots could be awkward. When diluted with freon or alchohol the the solution evaporates very rapidly and a good storage container is a must. ------------------------------------------------------------------- David Prager (w)206-827-9626 (h)206-821-3561 Teltone Corp. > I have heard good things about a contact cleaner called > cramalon (I really don't know about the spelling but it sounds that way). Try Cramolin. It works. It's a two-part setup--two liquids. The first cleans; the second one works to prevent oxidation. I don't know about pots, but it's good for contacts. I had been fighting with a Visual 100 terminal which has poorly designed (or perhaps under-spec'ed or mismatched) connectors to the power supply-- it would go weird every couple of months, which weirdness was remedied by cursing, disassembling, jazzing with connectors (contact cleaner and/or plug/unplug several times), and reassembling. I found the Cramolin stuff, decided to get some just to try it, and treated the poor lame Vis 100 something over a year ago; no problems whatsoever since then. (I don't really know how long it's been, just long enough that it doesn't matter any more.) Don't know just why it works--haven't studied the literature much. It doesn't do anything obviously nasty or weird (like fizzing or smoking or making things look very shiny). But it seems to work. -- Dick Dunn {hao, ucbvax, allegra}!nbires!rcd (303)444-5710 x3086 ...Simpler is better.
