I've seen mention of the Technics sl-xp7 (the new portable CD player) in the audio magazines for the past few months, but they don't seem to have shown up in stores yet. Does anyone now if there is a good reason? For those who aren't familiar with it, it is slightly smaller than Sony's portable, and has specs similar to Technics home CD players (in other words, pretty poor compared to most decent players, but probably adequate, and definitely better than the Sony D-5). I'm attracted to a portable, thinking that it would be nice to be able to have good music in every room of the house, but I'm wondering if this unit would make an adequate substitute for a larger home unit (say a Magnavox 1040, which at $100 cheaper might sound better). Any comments? -david anderson ..!seismo!cmu-cs-wb1!dba dba@k.cs.cmu.edu (412) 422-1255

I have seen it (at Federated stores) for $320 without the battery pack, which would cost another $80. It is thinner than the Sony D-5 (about 2/3) and looks real nice. ----------------------------------------------------------- | |> | | ||\ P.S. van der Meulen, MS 02 | | /|| \ Philips Research Laboratories | | / ||* \ Signetics Corporation | | / || \ 811 E.Arques Avenue | | / || \ Sunnyvale, CA 94088-3409 | | /____||_____\ Telephone (408) 991-5067 | | \prls!pieter/ | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -- ----------------------------------------------------------- | |> | | ||\ P.S. van der Meulen, MS 02 | | /|| \ Philips Research Laboratories | | / ||* \ Signetics Corporation | | / || \ 811 E.Arques Avenue | | / || \ Sunnyvale, CA 94088-3409 | | /____||_____\ Telephone (408) 991-5067 | | \prls!pieter/ | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

According to a recent issue of "U.S. News and World Report", Sony recently introduced a CD player that is even smaller than the Technics. It lists for $300, but this includes the battery pack and carrying case, unlike the price of the D-5. The article didn't say what features it had. -- Thomas Newton Thomas.Newton@spice.cs.cmu.arpa
