[net.audio] Comments on NAK and others

ab364@uiucuxa.CSO.UIUC.EDU (10/13/85)

I am going to buy a tape deck in the near future and am seriously considering
buying a Nakamichi. Before I actually purchase this deck I would like to have
a few questions answered and would appreciate any help that you can give me.

The deck that I want to buy is either the BX-150 (someone told me that
deck is no longer in production and its equivilent is the BX-125), or the
BX-300. I would like to build a stereo system that I can keep, and enjoy
for many years to come; because of this price is not nearly as important as
quality. Right now I would like to be able to make high quality dubbs from LPs
and eventaully CDs, the primary use of the tapes will be in my car, and at
home. Now for my questions. Is Nakamichi really all that good (I tried to
locate reviews of the BX-300 and BX-150,but could not find any)? Are there
other brands that preform as well or better? How much more/less do the cost?
Finally can someone suggest a good book or magazine to read so that I will be
able to KNOW what I am getting into (something that explains if I can hear
.029% THD, etc. )?

    Thank you for any help.

I once had a roomate who owned a Nakamichi BX 150. He really loved it, and I
would have to agree with him. It would outperform all but the *most* expensive
Harman Kardon decks. At that time it was well situated price wise against
the competitors. (~$500 vs ~$900) I made many tapes on this deck and am happy
with all of them. I use them for 'stereo shopping' and the salesmen always
want to know where I got the tape. When I say Nakamichi, they retreat to the
backroom where they all live....

The BX-150 has been out of production for almost 2 years. It was
an excellent deck (I had one until it was stolen; but I didn't
buy another NAK because the newer models were just over the price
boundary that I considered reasonable).
