I suspect that the problem with the Grado cartridge is that it is
improperly aligned. It is amazing how much a small change in angle or
amount of overhang can change the sound. Some cart's respond to
changes in the vertical tracking angle as well.
The first record I played with a newly installed cartridge had such
high levels of distortion that I thought that the drivers in my
speakers were broken.
Before making any radical changes in the system I would try and borrow
a cartridge alignment tool and make sure that things are set up
correctly. Alternatively, I would try and find someone who will set
up the cartridge for you. I wouldn't bother buying a cheap plastic
tool, they lack the precision necessary.
