I suspect that the problem with the Grado cartridge is that it is improperly aligned. It is amazing how much a small change in angle or amount of overhang can change the sound. Some cart's respond to changes in the vertical tracking angle as well. The first record I played with a newly installed cartridge had such high levels of distortion that I thought that the drivers in my speakers were broken. Before making any radical changes in the system I would try and borrow a cartridge alignment tool and make sure that things are set up correctly. Alternatively, I would try and find someone who will set up the cartridge for you. I wouldn't bother buying a cheap plastic tool, they lack the precision necessary. -- ---------------- Marty Sasaki net: sasaki@harvard.{arpa,uucp} Havard University Science Center phone: 617-495-1270 One Oxford Street Cambridge, MA 02138
