[net.audio] "Diskman" CD's real?

kpk@gitpyr.UUCP (Kevin P. Kleinfelter) (11/03/85)

Has anyone in netland seen a "Diskman" style CD player besides the
Sony in a stereo store? I see ads, spec sheets, reviews, etc. for portable
CD players by Technics and Yamaha, but can find none. A local "catalog
showroom" has a Technics CD player (NOT the D-5) listed in its catalog, but
not in stock ("We expect them to be delivered REAL SOON NOW").

Have there been problems with production? I know that the Sony D-5 is too
sensitive to vibration to be truly a portable.

If anyone has actually used a "Diskman" style CD player as a portable, I would
be interested in your review. I want to use one for skiing (downhill in
the white stuff...the only kind of real skiing).

Actually, there was announced a new SONY that actually had the batteries
inside it. I saw it in the papers about two weeks ago, but not in any
store. SRP $300.

I have had a Sony D-5 since June and have used it as a portable. I found
it fine for use while walking, traveling on NY subways, etc, but not for
jogging or climbing stairs -- it seems to be sensitive to irregular
motion, especially when the batteries are getting weak. BTW, alkaline
batteries seem to last about 4 to 5 hours; rechargeables (ni-cad) about
2.

Friends of mine do have the Diskman. (deluxe is about 240 bucks)
They do not use them as portables. They use them as a part
of their system, and have been extremely satisfied

I have wondered the same thing.
Someone talked about a "D-50, Mark II". None of the stores around here
have heard of it. It sounds like a Japanese model as they call the D-5
the D-50 over there, I've heard.
Anyhow, the December issue of ...high fidelity tells all about the
D-7. Like a D-5 only much smaller (when you consider the battery pack).
In fact, looks about the size of the D-5 when it has its battery pack
on. So I broke down and called sony (1-800-222-SONY). They said not
released in this country until January. I said, "That's a hell of a time
to release a new product." "It SURE is!" the young lady replied.

The D-7 is similar to the D-5 but several added features including
(HF says) programmability, shuffle play and at least some form of repeat.
With battery case included the list price is supposed to be $300 - same
list as the D-5.
