I have finally gotten around, after many years, to buying new components for my stereo system and found that the technology has changed almost beyond recognition. My previous system was purchase at the time when S-arms were the rage, Dolby was a new idea, and direct drive turntables were where it's at (in the language of the period). I presently find myself confronted with 'dbx' - presumably some noise filter, 'linear tracking turntables' - the value of which is suspect, 'class A' amplifiers (I've got a Yamaha A-720), and not to mention CD technology (which currently use rather bad D/A converters which give a poor approximation to the original sound near the beginning and end of slow-decaying wave forms). Would someone please let me in on the state of the art? I'd really appreciate a list of favourite turntables (~$300-500) and tape decks (to $800). Confused and befuddled, Randy -- Randall S.
