Has anyone on the net had experience ordering stuff from an outfit called DAK? They advertise in a lot of magazines, usually for very high-tech gadgets and home entertainment stuff. Often their bargains involve you having to order some of their own brand cassette tapes, which they claim are top of the line (i.e. as good as Maxell, TDK). Has anyone dealt with them? Any experiences-- good, bad, ugly, or indifferent? I recently got their catalog, and a $400 VHS Hi-Fi VCR (stereo) caught my eye. It's made by Emerson (or rather, by Mitsubishi for Emerson, according to a list posted a while back). Anyone know anything about it? And while we're at it, has anyone tried DAK cassettes? -- Paul Fox, AT&T Information Systems, Holmdel NJ. [ihnp4|vax135]!mtung!pgf (201)834-3740

As I've said before on net.audio, I've ordered from DAK for quite a while, and other than a printer that wasn't quite what I had expected, have never had any problems with them or their merchandise. While Emerson isn't exactly what you think of when you think hi-fi (more like what you think of when you think of K-Mart), a friend of mine has the $400 VCR. Here are some details (Caveat?): 1) Sometimes confusing owner's manual. Given time, though, you can figure it out. 2) No "LP" recording speed. This is the "4 hour" from a T-120 speed; with this VCR you can only use SP (2 hours) or EP (6 hours) to record. This is impor- tant, as many people use LP speed as a "halfway" point between picture quality and tape economy. It CAN, however, play LP speed tapes. Otherwise, I've heard no other complaints...
