[net.audio] CD Glitch

tommie@psivax.UUCP (Tom Levin) (03/14/86)

This was a reply to tomp but our machine chewed up my letter and I don't
have his address anymore, so...

The most noticable glitch on the wall is found on CD 2, track 6, time 0:0.
The very first chord of "Comfortably Numb" has a "pop" that sounds like
a static plagued record. Can anyone else confirm this? There is at
least one other glitch I heard before, but I am in the middle of moving
and cannot use my stereo yet to find it (oh woe is me).

Yours for better listening...

AHA!!! Yes, there are TWO "pops" that sound like static!!! Which CD
do you have??? I have the Harvest version, and the "Comfartably Numb" track
actually starts in the middle of some guy saying "Time to go!! Time to go!!"
with a girl saying "Are you OK??? Are you OK???" The actual music doesn't
start until 20 seconds into the track. The first "pop" happens 12 (almost 13)
seconds into the track, and the second happens at 19 seconds into the track.

Many people may be saying "Bah!!! Humbug!!!" but let me point out that
the "pops" are very soft, and I had to turn up the volume quite a bit to hear
them. I've had the CD for almost 6 months now, and this is the first time I
noticed it (of course, I'm always listening to the music, and unless there is
a very gross defect, I can always tune the minor defects out).

*** REPLACE THIS analog WITH YOUR digital ***

I was just listening to my player as I read this letter. Plopping in my
Wall CD2 and cueing up track 6 I found not only the pop you mentioned but a
few more pops at the end of 'Bring the Boys Back Home'. The pop wasn't as
drastic as a lp 'pop' but I could notice it. The other pops are very
subtile. I only noticed any of the pops with my headphones on...
Oh well, It says it is a 'Digitally Mastered Analog Recording' so they
probably used tape to make the album, played the album on a 'Close 'N Play'
and recorded the result on a digital master. |-]...
