I have read that in sanctioned Checkers Tournaments, after color has been decided by the pairing rules, the actual opening used in the game is determined by drawing from a "deck" of opening cards. The reason for this is that otherwise the side moving first can ALWAYS bust the other side, at least at championship human levels.
