I have a friend who is a novice at using computers and is considering buying a home computer to (initially at least) 1) Connect to a service such as Compuserve in order to get the latest stock market quotes ... 2) Write some fairly simple software that will his allow his high school science class to compute some results that would otherwise be beyond their capabilities. He came to me asking if I would recommend one or the other of the Apple or the IBM-PC. Now I am definitely more of an expert on Vax's that either of the above. So I am throwing the problem out at all you knowledgeable folks in Computer Land. The questions we would be most interested in having answered are: 1) If you have used one or both of the above, (or another personal computer in the same class) have you had any problems? Is there one PC you would recommend over the others? If so then why? 2) Where can we go in the Toronto area to get the best price on such machines, and what can we expect the price range to be at these places? 3) If you have used Compuserve or a similar service, what did you think of it? If you can answer any of these questions (or some others that I might not have thought to ask) please respond to me by mail. If I get enough interesting responses I will publish the results.
