Since there doesn't seem to be anyone particularly responsible for keeping track of groups in the Ontario distribution, I thought I'd send this out. Following is the list of groups that appear to exist under "ont" at the moment, and my definitions for them. ont.general Articles of general interest for all Ontario sites ont.events Special lectures, seminars, shows, etc. ont.jobs Job announcements, requests, etc. ont.micro * Micro computers of all kinds. ont.micro.mac * Apple MacIntosh micros. ont.singles * Newsgroup for single people, their activities, etc. ont.test Network testing ont.uucp Messages of interest to uucp administrators I think that the 3 groups marked * should be considered as candidates for elimination. In each case there is a corresponding "net" group, which gets more traffic. Also, in each case, the subjects are such that a reader isn't likely to want to segregate incoming articles that are from "ont" and that are from "net". If you want to restrict distribution of an outgoing article, Distribution: works now. So let's dump these 3 groups. MAIL responses to {utzoo, utcs, utcsrgv, dciem, nrcaero}!lsuc!msb.

The reactions seem to have stopped coming in regarding my suggestion to eliminate three groups in the ont distribution. I think there is enough support for ont.micro to allow it to live on for now, though I still don't think personally that it is necessary. For further comments see the group. Ont.micro.mac was originally created for the purpose now served by fa.info-mac, and nobody has cried out for it to live. Neither has anybody cried out for ont.singles to live. The only messages posted to either group since I proposed their elimination were followups to my proposal and were cross- posted to ont.micro anyway; so in effect these groups have no traffic. Final warnings are being posted to the two groups individually. The clock is ticking -- they will probably be removed in a week. Mark Brader -- {utzoo, utcs, utcsrgv, dciem, nrcaero}!lsuc!msb.
