Has anybody hereabouts investigated good ways to get to Portland
and back, for Usenix? The "guaranteed" discounts on United are,
of course, US-only, and United full fare is C$900.

I had the same problem trying to get to Dallas for Usenix in Februrary.
Try getting a flight to the nearest US point with connecting flights
to Portland. The discount should still apply for the US legs of your
journey.

I know that some people are considering a return flight to Vancouver,
and then either driving or flying down to Portland. If you can spare
a couple of days for the drive it's definitely worth it (lots of things
to see: Seattle, Mt. Ranier Nat. Park, Mt. St Helens, Boeing plant tour,
etc etc).

You might also check flight fares to and from Buffalo to take advantage
of those US discounts.
