"A contribution to the mathematical theory of big-game hunting" by H. Petard first appeared in the American Mathematical Monthly, V. 45 (1938) p. 446 et seq. There was a follow up article in the Monthly some years later. The first article was reprinted in "A Random Walk in Science", ed. E.
