[ont.general] The Results of my yearly question

david@geac.UUCP (David Haynes) (08/25/87)

Well, I think enough responses have been received to indicate the
concensus of the net with respect to the subject of headhunters.
The numbers I have now are:

	For continued posting: 15
        For discontinued posting: 2

Many thanks to the following people who responded:

drew@lethe, craig@unicus, reid@unicus, brian@radio, henry@utzoo,
owen@methods, msb@sq, goldste@uthub, harrison@utfyzx, jim@forgen,
decom@utcsri, gerry@syntron, dave@lsuc, king@dciem, ksbooth@watmath,
len@array, daveb@geac

Some observations:

Most people felt that the addition of "HH:" to the subject line
was a reasonable thing to do. I agree and will start to add that
to the subject of head hunter jobs posted from here. (In fact,
I notice that others have already started to add the prefix to
their messages).

There is a disturbing (to me) trend in some people's arguments that
one must contribute to the net in order to use/have access to it.
This troubles me from a number of points of view:

Firstly, I would have to stop the accounts of several people here
at Geac who are regular readers of the net, but who have never
posted an article to it in their life.

Secondly, I didn't buy the computer or the modem and I certainly
don't pay for the telephone calls I make to shuffle around the
news. Does this make me a non-contributing user of the net?
Should I go and purchase my own machine in order to gain access
to the net?

Finally, many people cited the head hunter articles as a useful
contribution simply because they help us to define the needs of
(potential) employers at some time in the future. (ie: they
help us to monitor trends in the computer industry) If these
postings were lost, I (and others) would feel that a valuable
resource to the net had been lost.

Therefore, the postings continue, with the addition of the HH:
prefix in the subject line.

Thanks once again for all those who took the time to respond.
