On Friday night I was watching the 6:00 news on global. One of the many election stories was about Premier Stanfield's speech at a Tory rally somewhere in the Maritimes (Nova Scotia I think). The anchor man, with a very straight face, described Stanfield as the ex-Prime Ministor. Not 30 seconds after the story was complete the anchor man very solomly appologized for refering to Stanfield as the ex-Prime Ministor and explained that he was the leader of the official opposition during years when the Conservative party was not in power. Then, there was complete silence with no picture for approximately another 30 seconds, after which the newscast continued as normal. What happended ???? Obviously someone REALLY SCREWED UP !!! I got the impression that during the 30 seconds of silence someone got fired (or shot). The sad part is, for a couple of seconds I actually believed that Stanfield WAS the ex-PM. I was scolding myself for not remembering him. It just goes to show you the power the media can have. Everything they say is instantaniously taken to be true. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Jespersen | uunet!watmath!trillium!hjespersen University of Waterloo | "Defn. of Natural Logarithm - A lumbarjacks Waterloo, Ontario | idea of birth control." --------------------------------------------------------------------------- P.S. Did anyone else see this? Tell me I didn't imagine it all.
