A friend told me that John Von Neumann was given this problem once by a reporter. Von Neumann replied with the correct answer immediately. The reporter remarked that most people would have tried to come up with the sum of the distances that the bee travels. Von Neumann replied: "That's how I did it". (Sorry if I don't have the Von Neumann name spelled correctly).
