[net.usenix] Where Is the January 1984 Usenix?

donn@sdchema.UUCP (Donn Seeley) (08/10/83)

For us lazy (or frugal) West Coast types who didn't make it to the
Toronto Usenix, could I ask where the January 1984 Usenix is really
going to be held? Someone must have mentioned this but I missed it.
Is it going to be on the West Coast? Who is the sponsoring organization?
Is there going to be another Usenix vs. /usr/group (or Uniforum or
whatever) fiasco? Will there be a vendor exposition?

I was previously under the impression that the venue was going to be
Salt Lake City; who had the bright idea to change this to June 1984?

Salt Lake lost out at the SD conference (big fight at the board meeting,
you should have been there). The Winter 84 conference (joint with
/usr/group, or whatever their name is this month) is supposed to be in
D.C.

See you in Salt Lake in June 84.

Winter USENIX in Washinton DC, summer USENIX in SLC?
I hear the skiing in DC is pretty hot.

And we're going back to joint conferences with /usr/group?

Oh, that really sucks. It sucks.

I can only assume that there was some transcendental logic behind
these decisions. I hope that the hackers unite at the next USENIX to
chase away /usr/group forever.

This note is, of course, my opinion rather than the Bell System (or
whatever we have to call it today) company line. I imagine that it's
also the opinion of much of the hacker and skier contingent.

Trb's right. It does suck! But the recreational aspect is not important.
I would guess that the compromises (changing the meeting location
holding a winter meeting in the East, collaborating with usr-group) were
made out of consideration for the new Unix community. usr-group represents
that community. Unfortunately I have very little in common with the binary
only world. I guess that'll leave me out in the cold (probably skiing
in Vermont) in the near future. All in favor of a Unix boff at Salt Lake
during the DC meeting send mail to utah-cs!fjl. We'll talk about we're doing?
Put together a common kernel distribution (how many levels of #ifdef can cpp
handle)? Think up some new games? Try to get all our shell scripts down to
one liners? Heck, we could spend a day trying to convince everyone why they
should fix/break uucp*.
