If you don't like the places where the Usenix/Unicom/Uniforum/ What-is-it-this-week conferences are held, come to the Usenix board meetings and speak out! If enough of us complain, maybe they will change. Also, talk to your "Usenix member" at your site and get him to vote for issues/board members who support your point of view. A resolution (amendment?) has been proposed to allow individuals to be voting members (currently, only institutions can vote). If this passes (again, lobby your institution's representative), then join as an individual member. Your vote can count! The current situation is "commercial" conferences in conjunction with /usr/group and a large trade show in the winter, and Usenix-only conferences in the summer. Since the large winter conferences are trying to attract LOTS of people, they have to be in places like DC, Vegas and LA. The summer conferences can still be in smaller places. This summer (84) will be in Salt Lake City, which is a d**m sight cheaper than DC. Y'all come now, y'hear! =Spencer
