The Dallas info/registration packet I got talks about "special air fares" through American Airlines. When we called American about this, they said the special rates were only from selected cities. We would have to pay regular fair to get to the nearest selected city. For me to travel from Rochester to New York and then from New York to Dallas costs more than traveling with another airline from Rochester to Dallas. Has anyone else had this problem? (The closest selected cities to Rochester were New York, Detroit, and Chicago). Are we getting hoodwinked by AA or our travel agent? The usenix brochure doesn't mention the requirement to fly from selected cities. Tim Becker ..!{seismo,decvax,allegra}!rochester!ccice5!tim

> The Dallas info/registration packet I got talks about "special air > fares" through American Airlines. There are also MUCH lower special fares available. Official "coach" roundtrip fare from San Francisco to Dallas is $700. But "economy" fares are available *unrestricted* from $218 round trip, even on American. These are normal, daytime roundtrip flights and you don't even have to sit on the wing. You can even collect AAdvantage miles and order a special meal (American's seafood plate and fruit salad plates are well above the average airline fare -- oops, sorry about the pun). For people in the SF Bay Area, the "official" travel agency has nothing to offer us. Elsewhere, look carefully and don't believe your travel agency's SABRE or Apollo system at first reading. If Braniff flies from your city to Dallas, you can bet that there will be low economy fares available through ALL of the airlines that fly to Dallas from your city -- just ask the right questions. See you there. Tony Wasserman ucbvax!{ucsfcgl|ucsfmis}!{waserman,wasserman}

It's interesting to note that UniForum has a different airline discount deal than Usenix. Apparently UniForum has a deal with Delta for some non-uniform discount rate, while Usenix has a deal with American for a flat 35% or 40% discount. The rates were quite different, too - the Delta/Uniforum rate from Columbus, Ohio was slightly over $200, while the American/Usenix rate from Columbus was about $350. (I don't know what the regular fares are so I can't verify that comparable discounts were made.) Since American has their hub in Dallas, and Delta's hub is in Atlanta, I'm a little surprised that Delta is the carrier of choice for UniForum.

When I asked about travel from Buffalo (the closest U.S. city) I was told that the discount would apply to ANY continental US flight. However, for the 40% discount, a 45 day advance purchase is necessary, NOT 30 days as quoted in the Usenix flyer. -- Avi Naiman UUCP: {decvax,linus,ihnp4,uw-beaver,allegra,utzoo}!utcsrgv!avi CSNET: avi@toronto

Both Usenix and Uniforum "advertised" prices of about $400 from the Washington D.C. area. Yet I found flights for as little as $270, which did not involve staying over a weekend, or other super-saver type restrictions. I would definitely recommend shopping around and not taking the advertised prices as guarenteed lowest available. -- eric ...!seismo!umcp-cs!aplvax!milo!eric

There were NO limitations! No minimum stay. No particular time of day I have to travel! I advise everyone to do some looking!! I almost took the "great deal", and would have payed $429 big bucks! {philabs, allegra}!sbcs!bruce bruce
