[net.usenix] Keeping costs down at Usenix

riddle@ut-sally.UUCP (Prentiss Riddle) (01/15/85)

Here's a big favor the denizens of Dallas on the net could do for the rest
of us:

While I'm going to bite the bullet and pay exorbitant hotel prices for my
stay at Usenix, I don't intend to add insult to injury and waste my money on
high-priced hotel food. Would someone care to post a list of good (and
hopefully CHEAP) eating establishments within walking distance of the
conference site? A couple of bars might be nice to add to the list as well.

I was in downtown Dallas in 1978 for a conference and it took us TWO DAYS
to find a restaurant open at night outside a hotel! Everyone goes home at
5pm; I never saw such a spooky downtown. You could sleep peacefully and
safely in the middle of an intersection if it wasn't for the friendly
Dallas police, who like to arrest you for jaywalking across deserted
streets. Guess they don't have much to do except watch empty buildings.
