Has anyone heard of a zork like game which runs on the HP 3000. It is
set in a sea coast town. I think it is called something like WORP, but
am not really sure. Any information anyone may have on this would be
appreciated. I would like to get a copy for one the HP 3000 here at
the University of Utah.

Please reply by mail.

Heard of it? We wrote it!
It's called Warp, and has been floating around HP for about 2 years now.
After spending countless hours playing Adventure, Zork, FisK, and Mansion
a friend and I here at HP Corvallis decided we could do one better.
We put together an enhanced Zork-like parser, built a complete world
scenario (centered around a seacoast resort), added LOTS of puzzles
(including many spinoffs from the other games), and put the whole mess
on a 3000. We tried to include everything you ever liked about Zork
and Adventure, then tried to improve on it.

For those of you who get off on statistics:
  * Source: about 17000 lines more-or-less-standard Pascal (sorry,
    we don't send it out.)
Database: about 6000 lines of ascii.
  * Total maingame points possible: 1216.
    Total endgame points possible: 100.
  * Parser is similar to Zork with macros and conditional clauses.
    Macros can have parameters.
  * Also runs on HP9836.

Send me mail if you want more information.

Sorry, but I don't think much of people or their products (OR their
companies) which come with rave reviews but "you can't see it".
If its a product, tell us how to buy it. If its research,
lets see the paper in the established journals. If its just a hack,
show your net responsiblity: back your claims with code or shut up.

I was rather aggrivated with umcp-cs!mark's comment about having
no respect for "people or their software ... which come with rave
revues but 'you can't see it'." Hp-pcd!bill, the co-author of the
software in question, said that he was willing to provide additional
information to those interested. In communicating with Bill, I
found that one can obtain an executable copy of this software.
What more can be asked for? (As a software author, I understand
the desire to protect one's source code.)

I suggest that Mark Weiser go to the trouble of obtaining an executable
copy and using it, before spouting off.

I appreciate the effort Bill is making for us computer gaming enthusiasts.

Feeling much better!

Sorry, I guess I got a bit carried away there. I wasn't trying to
give a sales pitch or promote *rave reviews*.

The game is *not* a product; it is not for sale (it's free), nor does it have
anything to do with the company (other than run on an HP3000 and consequently
exists primarily at HP sites.)
