I learned that a gammon wins twice the wager and a backgammon three times, but many people I've played with insist it's four times, i.e. twice what a gammon wins. What's "correct"? Anybody really KNOW? -- Roger Noe ...ihnp4!ihlts!rjnoe

#R:ihlts:-23500:hp-cvd:4500001:000:684 hp-cvd!ken Oct 31 15:04:00 1983 I've played a fair amount of tournament backgammon, so I may be considered an authority. A backgammon is worth 3 times the cube value. This is the american convention and cannot be disputed. Of course you could create any new convention desirable to all players, so computer hackers who tend to think in powers of two may want a backgammon to count as 4 times the cube value (but this is not the standard). ------------------ Aside... I'm gammon starved here in Corvallis, I would love to discuss, or play backgammonm on any level, with anyone. Just mail me a proposal. I have played gammon by mail to New Zealand, so it is possible. -Ken Bronstein hp-cvd!ken

Having played in several backgammon tournaments, I can state for sure that a gammon is worth double and a backgammon triple. The only way to get more than triple is to use the doubling cube. Another interesting bit of trivia: Although it is not possible to get a gammon after your opponent has borne off one or more pieces, you can still get a backgammon if you can catch him on the bar or in your home court when you finish bearing all your pieces off, even if he has already borne some pieces off. -- {ucbvax!hplabs | allegra!nbires | decvax!brl-bmd | harpo!seismo | ihnp4!kpno} !hao!woods
