That problem with the left controller of the Atari 2600
losing its fire-button control (or worse) has turned up
in *every one* of my friends' 2600s I have played, that's
three in all. This is one reason I bought an Intellivision
instead. (It has other problems though which I won't go into now.)
For what little it's worth, I've found that a careful wiggle of the
controller's plug can temporarily restore the missing function,
*provided* that one is careful not to pull on the cord while playing.
You may have a tendency (I do) to yank the controller around in
imitation of the desired on-screen result. (NNNgggghh! RRRrr!
ohNOOOOO!) Pulling on the cord is probably why it poops out in
the first place. I don't know any reliable solution to the problem.
