Hi, I play zork occasionally, and am somewhat a beginner still. I have this problem: whenever I come to the place with a 'platinum bar' the program sort of dies. Anything I type is echoed in uppercase, the '>' prompt isn't given, and only EOF (^D) exits zork. Since I don't know much about zork, I don't know exactly how to avoid this place and sometimes end up there by mistake, which ends the game for me. I'm like any suggestions. Thanks a lot, Andrew Royappa {ucbvax,decvax,harpo}!pur-ee!purdue!avr avr@purdue (ARPA) p.s that's "I'd like any suggestions .."

Ditto! I've tried entering a command such as "go east, get bar" to force the parser to do a command in the room for me, but that doesn't work either! What gives?

The room you are in is called the 'echo room'. The name itself is the clue. Next time you're there, type 'echo' and see what happens. The Dungeon Master seismo!rochester!ccivax!djh seismo!rochester!ritcv!ccivax!djh

Ok, I hate to spoil it, but: Think about what the room is doing. Then say what it is doing aloud. If you can't get it from that hint, you should not be playing Zork. -Zork Endgamist -- David C. regarding the platinum bar room in zork: what would you do if you were hiking in the mountains and found a cliff with a particularly good ECHO?

#R:CS-Mordr:-11600:uiucdcs:9200011:000:273 uiucdcs!cicone Feb 10 12:55:00 1984 When you enter the room with the bar, type in *echo*. You can then type in any other directions, including *take bar* and leave the room. Hope that helps your game. My husband and I have documented 55 rooms so far in Zork 1 and I know we still have not seen everything!

If you are going to help someone with Zork, please just give hints. If you are going to give it away, send them mail, the rest of us do not want to see your spoilers. Or at very least, announce that it is a spoiler. I won Zork many years back when it was still on MIT-DM, where it was developed. The one thing that helped me win was a very good map. Without that, you are pretty much sunk. Every once in awhile a hint would help, but it really upset me if someone came right out and told me what the answer was. -- David C. #N:uicsl:4500006:000:406 uicsl!rays Mar 12 16:43:00 1984 OK, I give up. Having finally found the air pump and used it to inflate the boat, I'm having trouble getting myself and the boat into the water. Zork gives me nonsense like "the water hits the water and evaporates immediately" (or something like that) when I try to put the boat in the water. After this, my boat vanishes. What's the secret? Do I need to be carrying something in particular or what?

There should be a label in the boat. Try reading it.
