[net.games] Help needed with 4.2 sail

bwm@ccieng2.UUCP (Brad Miller) (07/11/84)

Anyone have the doc to this game on the 4.2 distribution tape? None
was included. More specifically, I have figured most things out
except how to change direction and velocity -- so if you can send
a man page, or just a description for this capability, thanks.

Nuts! How many more people are going to bother us with stupid questions
because they are too lazy or ignorant to *really* look at what comes
with the 4.2BSD distribution from Berkeley.

For the last time (from me at least) the documentation for sail is in
the file "/usr/src/games/sail/sail.6" on the 4.2BSD tape.

If your administrator has not shelled out the bucks for a source license,
there will be no "/usr/src/games", indeed no "/usr/src" at all. Therefore,
no documentation on sail. Even systems that have source, "/usr/src" is
often closed to normal mortals. (It was on the last system I worked on.)
One should reflect for a time before shooting off mouth. We don't need
this crap.

1. Some of the queries about this have specifically referred to the
    Berkeley distribution which is *source*.

2. Reasonable binary distributions (e.g. Sun) have the Sail documentation
    in /usr/man/man6 where it belongs.

3. Part of *really looking* for something involves asking your friendly
system adminstrator. We have /usr/src/games closed off but I have
    put sail in /usr/man/man6.

4. Yes, people should engage brain before opening mouth. That is exactly
the point my earlier reply was trying to make.

I'll concede that one.

	2. Reasonable binary distributions (e.g. Sun) have the Sail
documentation in /usr/man/man6 where it belongs.

Sorry, ours did not. We got sail.6 from another usenet site. Our binary
distribution was not reasonable? Besides, I think we can safely assume
that the person tried "man sail" first. Don't you?

	3. Part of *really looking* for something involves asking your friendly
system adminstrator. We have /usr/src/games closed off but I have
   	 put sail in /usr/man/man6.

Umm, well, that depends on the system administrator. It wouldn't have occured
to ME to look there, (wouldn't have worked anyway) but I'm just a hacker that
happens to have the SU password. Like some system administrators.

	4. Yes, people should engage brain before opening mouth. That
is exactly the point my earlier reply was trying to make.

Not quite. The difference is this: Not knowing something is not a crime!
Those of us that are more familiar with [insert topic here] have a, if not
duty to help, at least obligation not to interfere! There is lots of abso-
lute drivel on the net (This missive probably adds to it) but by flaming easy
(not stupid) questions you are only ADDING to the gobs of useless junk. The
question was important to the person who asked it, and he probably received
thousands of copies of sail.6 So what? (He asked, leaving himself wide
open...) Besides, some poor netter is even now languishing in ignorance
because he's afraid of posting his question. :-)

So I can't be accused of totally ignoring the newsgroup rules, I have a
request for the documentation on /usr/games/search on the 4.1 tape. I've
really looked for it, really I have. Honest.

The fact that you mentioned a "reasonable binary distribution" example
indicates that you know that there may be some that aren't. Then there
are systems where the administrators don't give a sh*t about helping
users find documentation (or even software), especially for games.

If you had engaged your brain, you would have realized that *the world
isn't reasonable*. Some of us have to live with a unix system with
pieces missing (then again, some of us have to live with Unix, period).

So, to shut all this up, if the sail doc isn't to long, why doesn't someone
who has a copy post it (I don't have one - I live in the unreasonable
part of the world).
