The wand of death or wand of sleeping can be used to plunder shops.
The wand of death can be used to kill the shopkeeper. The wand of
sleeping, however, is much more civilized. As soon as you enter the
shop (i. e. when you're standing in the doorway) put him (her? can't
tell with these foreign names) to sleep. The wand of polymorph can also
be used (if you don't change the shopkeeper into something worse).
The wand of polymorph is also good for those pesky mimics.
It also happened twice that while inside of a shop, the little dog
disappeared! The first time, some searching around discovered a
trap door. I just gathered up everything I could and stepped onto
the trap. The second time it turned out to be a teleport trap.
Same effect. What fun!
In a recent game, I zapped a kobold with a wand, only to discover it
was a wand of haste monster. I was still able to kill the kobold.
It then occured to me to zap the little dog. I later encounted an imp.
As I was running from the imp, the little dog was able to chase the
imp and hit it every turn. Save my life (for a bit, at least).
