[net.games] Winning at Hack

carlton@masscomp.UUCP (Carlton Hommel) (01/08/85)

Now that I have your attention....

Please stop sending me requests for various hack kits. I use rn, the
civilized news program, and its advanced and arcane features enabled me to
unshar all 15 parts of the distribution out of net.sources direct to my
~/hack directory.

I DON'T HAVE THE DISTRIBUTION FILES, AND CANNOT MAIL THEM TO YOU.

Now, to my complaint: I get down to level 27. I solve the maze. I kill
the minotaur. I get the wand of digging. I zap walls and move menhirs until
I start starving. I kill Pheep, the Wonder Dog, to keep from starving. I
finally find the Amulet, and identify that it is no cheap imitation. I avoid
the D's, the P's, the e's, et al. and get up out of the dungeon. And what
reward do I get?

Number Points Name Hp [max]
  1 140214 Notelrac-W escaped the dungeon [max level 27]. 102 [102]
  2 13431 Rack-W was killed on level 8 by a dead giant ant. 71 [71]
  3 8224 Wombat-F was killed on level 10 by a killer bee. - [61]
  4 5477 Bsd4.2-C quit on dungeon level 8. 31 [39]

No horde of cheering elves, no Bifrost Bridge, no clever animation! What a
rip! This in a game that glorys in obscure coding practices to confuse the
unwary cheater! A game that spends a whole 1000 line module to cover
engravings. I protest! It doesn't even tell the scorefile that I found the
Amulet! Sheesh.

(Flames to /dev/null. I won, nyaah nyaah. This makes me a superior human
being, you buffalo foreskin, you weasel afterbirth, you bat guano, you.)

Wife: Goodie, you won. My turn, my turn.
Husband: Maybe I can convince them to give me two modems, and two terminals.
