[net.games] ZORK I questions

pearse@hound.UUCP (S.PEARSE) (01/11/85)

I'm trying to go to hell. But something goes wrong every time!
I ring the bell in hades, relight the candles, and pray from the
book. The spirits always end up laughing at me.
I've tried this a hundred times! Please, can someone give me
a hint as to what I'm doing wrong?

Question two: What is the command to check out your health?
(I don't have the owner's manual)

Question three: When I get past the cyclops, the thief always
defeats me. How can I kill the thief?

Thanks in advance,
Steve Pearse

If you perform the EXORCISM in the correct sequence,
the spirits will get more worried after each step.
RE-light the candles? PRAY from book or READ from it?

> Question two: What is the command to check out your health?

DIAGNOSE. And why DON'T you have the manual? Did your pet
eat it or did you perhaps cheat the developers out of their
royalty by buying a bootlegged copy?

You can defeat the thief by attacking him with a knife.
You will usually get wounded in the process and may die
if you're unlucky. Also, certain things make the thief
harder to kill. Make sure you employ his skills before
doing him in.

Rather than ring the bell, read the book, etc. What is it that you are
really performing? Just state the name.

As for health, I don't know.

FOr the thief, the idea I have used is to drop all but the sword or knife,
lamp and the egg. got in the thief's liar (use lots of saves) drop the egg
and pass on. solve the puzzle move (takes 59 moves) come back from the
puzzle room and kill the thief. It is not a guarenteed kill, so be prepared.

This is right for Zork but not for Zork I, the subject of the original
article. The two games are similar but not identical. The EXORCISE
command elicits only "you must perform the ceremony", and the puzzle
room is in Zork III not Zork I.

Not in the version of ZORK I that I have. If you say exorcise, you
get "you must perform the exorcism". Exorcise may work in ZORK,
but there are some differences between the games.

diagnose works in all of the ZORK's. This is an interesting question in
that the answer appears on page 7 of the Zork I documentation. Maybe
you overlooked it?

1) Kill the thief with the nasty knife.
2) If you give the thief any treasure, he will stop and admire it for
a turn. You get a free shot at him. This can be repeated for every
   treasure you can carry.

I long ago was a dungeon master on the (slightly larger) game at
MIT-DM. I have all the treasures on the UN*X version but can't remember
how to get the bird to drop the bauble (which of course prevents
me from going downstairs to Hades successfully). I would appreciate
a little help.

I thought I was going crazy! I originally posted this question,
and thanks for the helpful responses. But someone pointed out
there are TWO Zork 1's, or I should say Zork and Zork I. I have
the old version, without some of the extra stuff, like when
you just say "exorcise" to make the spirits go away. People have
also referenced rooms and objects (like an exploding brick and a
well and a balloon and a shimmering wall of water) that are not in my version.

Anyway, mine is a 1982 version, possibly explaining the difference.
Question: Does the "granite wall" mean anything? Other than the
fact that the wall really is not granite?

go out into the woods, wait for the chirping in the distance.
wind up the canary: it'll commence singing. The bird will come by and drop
the bauble.

There are two granite walls in the dungeon. This is a hint that they
are significant to the game. Specifically (SPOILER):

There is a way to get from one to the other (magic transportation).

No.

In response to the reponse:

I got all the way thru the game (and to the gates of ZORK II)
	without using the 'granite walls'
