I am having a terrible time with Infocom's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. This is supposed to be a standard ranking game but I can't seem to get started even though I have had a fair amount of adventure games experience. Perhaps I am not doing all I should on the Earth before trying to hitch a ride on the space ship. I either get killed when the Earth is destroyed or I try to hitch a ride and end up in the pitch dark with no way to go any farther. Any hints without giving it completely away would be appreciated. If you are working on the game and are farther than I am, drop me a line. I'll keep a list and maybe we can keep in touch as we work our way along. I know you can get the hint booklet but I feel that is cheating. Helping each other out is only semi-cheating :-). I hope to hear from at least a few people that are working on this game. I have played HGTTG until the point where I tend to get eaten by Bugblatter Beasts. However, I can't play lately, because I don't have an apple with me. If someone could satisfy my curiosity by releasing the results of the command CONSULT GUIDE ABOUT IBIZIA I would be most grateful. To get out of the dark, wait until the description leaves out a sense, and then use that sense. -- Tom Lippincott (" There are those who call me TIM! ") ihnp4!gargoyle!sphinx!fdot ??

The solution to the problem lies in the dark place. Hints... 1) 4 out of 5 sensitive people can solve this problem in only a few moves. 2) Although you cannot feel, see, touch, smell or taste, and do not know who you are, you may find that some of your senses return... now where did I put my microscopic space fleet? ") First, that's "Ibiza". Second, the guide lists that under unanswered questions. Nice try. Since you've gotten up to the beasts, however, maybe you can give me some help. I'm on the Heart of Gold, but very frustrated. I can't open the screening door. I can't do anything with the hatch mechanism. I've assembled the spare drive, but it has untoward results when I press the switch. I can't provoke any interesting reaction from Eddie or Marvin. I can't find where the other characters (Zaphod, Ford, and Trillian) went to. Why did the bugblatter get you? The gun (from the ship's galley) is supposed to be good against it. Also, the guide gives some useful advice about dodging it. Except for Zaphod, he goes to get a drink in the galley from time to time. As the game often says, "that's not important. Leave it alone" You say you've asembled the spare drive. I assume that you have found a good source of Brownian motion (like a cup of hot tea substitute), and assembled the atomic vector plotter. When the infinite improbability drive is assembled (but not necessarily plugged in anywhere) turning it on can make everything go dark.... > >Why did the bugblatter get you? The beast must be delt with before landing on the legendary lost planet of magarathea, and opening the hatch door. * Have you tried reading footnote 12? * And now a question, does anyone know how Trillian picks up 'Phil' at the party? Or should she? Michael Jenkin Now where did I put my microscopic space fleet?

> And now a question, does anyone know how Trillian picks up 'Phil' at > the party? Or should she? > > Michael Jenkin > Now where did I put my microscopic space fleet? Yes, I do. Picking up Phil involves picking up (and dropping) a number of other objects. When the situation is right, Phil will pick you up. If you'd like more details, just write. About the microscopic space fleet: my brother mentioned there is some way to save the fleet, but didn't explain if this is on Earth (when you encounter the small dog) or later (when you meet the Vl'hurg and G'gugvunt leaders). When is it, folks? It's Earth. There's something yu have to get that you might not at first notice. (That's a reasonable hint - there are only a few locations on Earth). Steven Grady
