[net.games] Zork 2: Is this a bug?

vishniac@wanginst.UUCP (Ephraim Vishniac) (02/06/85)

I encountered the following situation in Zork 2. Is this a bug?

While attempting to deal with the maze of oddly angled rooms
(the ones with the diamond-shaped window on the floor), the
wizard of Frobozz appeared and said "float." I, and all my
belongings, started floating about five feet off the floor.

The buggy part: in order to get back to the ground I tried
"drop myself." The dungeon master replied, "The you drops
to the ground." I tried to walk away, but it turned out that
I was actually still in the air. If I look around, the
dungeon master tells me that "There is a you here." If I
try to do anything more to myself, he says "You can't reach
that, it's on the ground."

Another Zork question: am I correct in supposing that the menhir
has something to do with the Wizard? If I manage to move/take/destroy
the menhir and go behind it, will I be able to put a stop to the
Wizard's annoying antics? (No spoilers, please, but hints will be
gratefully accepted.)

I havn't tried dropping myself so this may be a bug.
The only way I have found to get back to the ground is to
'WAIT' about 5 times and then I gently float back to the
ground and go about my adventure.

I also need a few hints..

  1. Is there a way to get the red sphere in the dingy closet??

  2. I have put the lizard to sleep (in the guarded room) but
how do you open the door???

  3. How do you get to the passage behind the dragon??

  4. What do you feed the cerberus to get into Hades??

  5. Is there way to get out of the bank with the portrait
and the money?? I can only get out with one or the other.

  Any help would be appreciated.

     Nick

Zork2 must consider "you" to be very dangerous because your sword will
glow whenever you return to a room where "you" has been dropped. Another
thing to try is going into the gazebo and saying "take tea". That looks
a little buggy to me.

BTW: If you want to get the red sphere just pick it up. Theres nothing to
stop you and you get at least one or two more moves to enjoy it before
you die. Now if you could only get someone to help you out of the cage.

1. There must be.

2. Have you tried the tiny golden key? Probably not, since you won't have
it until after you visit the room guarded by the dragon. BTW, how did
   you narcotize the lizard?

3. The dragon is useful to you, if you can get him in the right place.
Once you do, he'll automatically do you a good turn and kill himself.

4. Sleeping pills? I tried Bullfinch's Mythology, but it wasn't helpful.

5. I'm told (I've been busy with other puzzles) that if you give the
portrait to the gnome of Zurich, there is some way to come back later
and retrieve it by presenting a card (?) that you find somewhere.

There is a better way than wasting treasures on gnomes.

Of course! In fact, footpad, you'll be embarrassed when you
realize how easy it is...

	A key?? Seen one anywhere??

>
> 3. How do you get to the passage behind the dragon??

By killing the dragon, of course! You'll get a kick out of this one.
BTW, this should make (2) clear.

>
> 4. What do you feed the cerberus to get into Hades??

Feed him?? Hades?? Be patient, you won't have to deal with this for
a while yet.

It IS possible (and necessary, eventually) to get both -- this is one
of the toughest puzzles in the game -- in fact, I think it's kind of unfair.
Hint: some waiting is involved -- and trial and error is about the best
approach...

I don't know if that is a bug but ......
Reread your note a few times - you have just given yourself a very large
hint (actually, you talked about everything needed to solve the Menhir
problem, but you don't possess them). You have to take care of the Wiz
before you solve the Menhir.
