I have played some Zork on the Apple home computer, whenevr I can get some time and I'm over at one of my friend's houses. However, I have never gotten it on this system. I am on Unix, is there a zork available for my system? Andrew Garrett

I'm pretty far along in Zork, but am now stymied. I'd appreciate a hint as to how one can close that big black book, since I've concluded (correct me if I'm wrong) that the rite of excommunication will get me through the Gates of Hell. Thanks much!

Er, no. It's a rite of exorcism. Consider that a hint. -- -- Greg Noel, NCR Torrey Pines Greg@sdcsvax.UUCP or Greg@nosc.ARPA

I have some more questions about zork, and I'd be very grateful for answers which are neither totally uninformative (e.g., "you're wrong") nor informative (e.g. "put x in the oven at 350C for 25 min."). Here goes: 1) Is there some use for the phrase "hello sailor"; if so, please hint at location (I've tried the places I considered promising). 2) What does one do with a pile of wooden timbers? 3) How does one GENTLY crack an egg? 4) What is the significance of all those granite walls? 5) What is bat guano good for? 6) What about the crack "too small for most insects"? Thanks.

. Help! I have racked up 490 points, but am now stuck as to what to do next. I have not yet gotten by the Entrance to Hades, and have not explored the Sandstone & Marble Maze (though I do know about the gold card and the steel door. My question(s) is(are) 1. How do I get by the Entrance to Hades? (I read on the net that the first two steps were to ring the bell, and to light the candles. I have tried everything I can think of as the third step with no luck.) 2. Just how do you get the portrait of Flathead out of the vault? I know it involves the curtain, and someone else got it out, but when I tried the same steps (as he remembers them) it didn't work. 3. I was told that the Endgame is reached through the Sandstone and Marble Maze. Is this true, and do I do this last or is it reached through the Entrance to Hades? Thanks in advance, and by the way, I would appreciate the answers A.S.A.P. because I leave in one week to return to school, and would like to solve this before I go. <munch munch munch> Entrance to hades.....Sounds like a good place for an exorcism to me. (Candles and bell are needed) Watch out for the wind by the gate, it sometimes blows out the candles. Ah the puzzle room.....Don't want to use the gold card to get out though, its worth points in the trophy case. If you make a map of the various walls as you go, you will see a bit of logic to the wall pushing.....Like getting the wall with the ladder firmly attached under the hole in the ceiling. Since you can't "pull" a wall make sure you don't box yourself in. Its kinda like the little plastic puzzles with the one square missing, where you have to slide the pieces around to put them in some particular order. The bank vault.......Can't seem to remember the sequence for it. Maybe someone else on the net can help you there (my memory is shot from playing too many computer games). End game you say......Hades is the answer. Seems like you have to climb into a coffin after everything else is in the display case and wait. Yes wait! After waiting for a while (assuming you did everything else correctly) the coffin (or tomb) will open from hades into the end game (and you thought the regular game was hard!!!!). Hope this helps you. Good luck ........one brick short of a full load Gary

To get the portrait out, you should know that the game allows you to "walk through curtain", and that where you end up after walking depends on the room you were in prior to entering the room with the large cube. Also, there is a way out of the "small bare room" without the Gnome helping you. If you haven't figured that out, you probably haven't found the stack of Zorkmid bills. To enter the land of the dead, some versions allow you to "exorcise", and some require that you perform the ceremony (ring bell, light candles, read book). To begin the endgame, you need all the points, and you need the wraithlike figure to speak to you (similar to the sepulchral [sic?] voice in Adventure). After that happens, you can open the Tomb of the Unknown Implementer. Always happy to spoil someone's zorkventure, Bill Stoll (..!whuxle!wws)

#N:uiucdcsb:7700013:000:966 uiucdcsb!husmann Aug 13 22:00:00 1984 I sent out these zork questions a couple of weeks ago but I'm not sure they made it to the net. Let me know if you saw these the first time around. (1) how do I inflate the balloon? (2) are there any secret passages (or anything interesting) in the bank? I just wander around the place. What is significant about the 10' cube stone (vault)? How do I get in the vault (if I can)? (3) are there more places to sail the boat than the reservoir and between the dam and the falls? Can and how do I get below the falls? Is the barrel good for anything? (4) how do you get by the bat in the jade figure room? (5) how do you enter Hades? (even after the previous note about entering Hades I still didn't figure it out) (6) are there passages out of the well room (besides the obvious)? What can be done with the wooden bucket? What do the writings on the wall mean? Thanks in advance! Harlan Husmann {ihnp4,pur-ee}!uiucdcs!husmann

Inflating balloon: It is a hot air balloon. How do they work? Bank: The cube is not relevant. Examine the shimmering curtain. Falls: The boat can be used outside as well, but it is only needed on the river above the falls. You can drain the reservoir. You can reach the base of the falls from outside the house. The barrel is useless. Bat: It is a vampire bat. Vampires are afraid of garlic. Hades: You enter by completing an exorcism. Light candle, ring bell, read book, or maybe just "EXORCISE" demons. Well: Enter bucket, pour water.

If anyone out there can help me with my problem I would greatly appreciate it. The problem is that I when I play my game I am unable to pick up the platinum bar in the loud room. This is for my personal computer, a DEC rainbow 100B. What happens is when I type: take bar it replies: bar bar... after which it will just repeat everything I say until I command it to leave the room. I am totally confused. If anyone out there understands what is happening or if I am forgetting to do something please tell me. Until then I quess I'll just have to do my regular work. Thanks alot in advance, Wayne Lyle. :: :q

Here is what you want: *************************** SPOILER ********************************** echo ********************************************************************** Just type this. Then you should be able to get the bar. Dan Wallach (...!convex!danny)

Sorry for posting this instead of mailing but the address field in the article was all messed up. To help unconfuse you without giving anything away, you have entered the "echo room". Now the trick is to figure out how to get the echo to stop. -- Dave Brierley Raytheon Co.; Portsmouth RI; (401)-847-8000 x4073 ...!decvax!brunix!rayssd!dhb ...!allegra!rayssd!dhb ...!linus!rayssd!dhb

Does anyone out there have the source or binary for Zork? I'm running a VAX (3B, too) with UNIX 5.0. THanks in advance! ksl

Re: Zork (the mainframe version). There is, in this version, a game debugging tool (gdt). When you type gdt, you are prompted with a cryptic six-letter word and if you can reply with the correct answer you have access to the debugging tool itself. The question on the first turn is "DHNZUO" and the answer is "IDEQTQ". The answer to any particular question can be found by typing "incant, XXXXXX" where XXXXXX is the question on a separate terminal. The question appears to be a function of turn and actions performed. Does anyone out there know anything about the algorithm used to encode/decode the questions/answers? It obviously isn't a simple substitution (because of the two Q's in the answer where there is no double letter in the question) but what is it? Once in to gdt, HE gives you a list of commands; does anyone know how to use the commands, what format they print things out in, what the numbers mean etc? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Please respond by mail and a summary will be posted if it appears warranted. --Alex and Kay ...seismo!mcvax!ukc!ubu!snow!asz -- Virtue is its own punishment. ... mcvax!ukc!ubu!snow!kay
