[net.games] Board Games

If you like FRP games, WIZARDS by Avalon Hill is good, but takes a minimum
of 6 hours to play, we found. Also Cosmic Encounters won the Best New Game of
the Year, several years ago. Be forwarned - it's costly , and had lots of
expander sets. Just start with the basic game and play that until you're
bored before you buy the expander kits. (I think there might be 15 expansion
kits by now.) This game goes much quickly, depending on what house rules you
play by, like maybe 1-2 hours per game. Involves luck as well as skill.
Best bet is to find someone else that has it, to see if you like it, before
you invest all that money in the game though.
Has aspects of poker - bluffing, keeping your cards/powers unknown to others.
I must say that I enjoyed Cosmic Encounters immensely. Can be played by any
number of players (2 to 10+), but 5 makes the best game, I think.

I too would like to see more discussion of board games in this newsgroup. I
wonder if the nature of boardgames is such that we can sustain interest in it.
If you'll notice, most of the postings in this newsgroup seem to be of the form:
"hints wanted on blah" (or at least that's been my impression). We've sustained
a good discussion on good first moves in Diplomacy in net.games.pbm but I'm not
sure if the diverse nature of board games will allow that kind of discussion
since you have to own a game before you can talk about it.

Not to end the posting on a negative note, I hope that we do promote more
discussion on board games in this newsgroup since there are a lot of lonely,
frustrated gamers out there :-).
