I just got a copy of the Dragon #100 (my first ever copy of the magazine). I am really intrigued by the article on dragon chess, although I do have a few quibbles with the way Gygax designed some of the pieces. quibble 1) The Dwarf seems to be severely limited. The Warrior can be promoted if it makes it across the board and the Sylph can go back to its starting position if desired, but the Dwarf has to just sit there if he makes it across the board. I would propose that it be allowed to move backwards vertically and (maybe) capture on the backwards diagonals. quibble 2) The Gryphon seems to have quite limited mobility in the air, more limited than one would expect. Allowing it to add the traditional knight's movement to the current pattern would fix that (I think). quibble 3) The Warrior should be allowed to promote to a Paladin as well as a Hero. The current rule on promotion is a little too limiting. Aside from those items, I think it's a good game. I would recommend that anyone who enjoys variations on traditional games look it over. Who wants to give it a try? "How does anything get down around here?" "This is a bureaucracy. Nothing is supposed to get done." the Shadow ARPA: <jeffh@brl> UUCP: {seismo, decvax}!brl!jeffh
