[net.games] Ultima III questions

davidk@dartvax.UUCP (David C. Kovar) (08/15/84)

I beat Ultima II about 7 months ago and only recently indulged in
Ultima III. After several all night sessions I have worked out
most of my probelms, save for the following:

	1) How to you get more magic points??? We have > 10th level
magic users of various sorts and they are all stuck at
their starting level of magic points. Very discouraging.

	2) How do you get past the snake? You're supposed to invoke
it somehow, but all my attempts have failed.

	3) How do you get past walls of fire? I have the Mark Of Fire
which I assumed would do the trick, but no, I still get
	   fried and tossed back out.

I've been playing Ultima III on my Apple II- off and on for about 8 months
now. The characters in the group are around 20th level and all have the
mark of fire and will soon have the mark of power.

Does anyone know where to find the Mark of the King? Supposedly, once a
character has the mark of the king, his hit points can be raised beyond
550. It would be nice for my characters to have more than 550 hit points each.

Where is Exodus? I've heard that Exodus is actually a computer with slots
which you put 'cards' into, but where are the cards and what are the
consequences of putting the cards into Exodus?

I've found the temples in the underworld where characters can raise
characteristic points (intelligence, strength, etc), but is there anything
ele down there worth looking for?

What are some of the 'other' commands? I've discovered only one useful
'other' command thus far -- bribe -- which is useful getting around guards
at a gate or stopping one from attacking you.

I've heard there is a treasure room in Lord British's castle. Is it worth
going into? I haven't found it yet because I think it is protected by
the power field next to the healer's room.

Is there some other, easier way to get rich quick than to invade the treasure
room in Death Gulch?

Answers to these questions and other helpful information will be greatly
appreciated. If you would just like to exchange information, drop me a line
via e-mail and maybe we can trade notes!

The lower level of one of the dungeons (I forget which).

INCANT (or some such) is useful for dealing with the snake.

I would like to hear the answers to the other questions..

Back when I owned an IBM PC I won Ultima III. If you could be a bit
more specific with your questions, I should be able to answer your
questions. Wish the game would come out for the Mac...

The Macintosh version of Ultima III is in the works. I won't venture
to say when it will come out, but it will come out in a "little while".
The author of the IBM version is doing the Mac version also.

Yes, this is a record. I am a beginner at Ultima III (having
it given to me) IBM-PC version. I have a few questions.

1. Where is the "Mark of King"? The "Mark of Force"?

2. How do you get into the temple which exists (SPOILER) when
you ram your ship into a whirlpool? What happens here?

3. What are Cards? What are they used for? How do you get them?

4. Does anyone have a general map of Sosaria WITH the locations
of the cities and dungeons? (Yes, I have the cloth map).

5. Can you cure poison WITHOUT buying healing OR spell (by, say
   going somewhere)?

6. Do you get experience for things other than killing monsters?

7. How do you raise your ability?

8. Can you die of old age?

9. After Level 25, can you get more Hit Points?

10. Can you get more Hit Points without going up a level and
    go to Lord British?

Any help on these questions and hints will be greatly appreciated!

My answers consitute rather serious spoilers. Don't read this if you
don't want to see them...

The marks are all found in various dungeons (there are red-hot metal bars
which you touch to get the mark...).

I'm afraid I can't remember what the problem is that you're talking about.
When you go through the whirlpool aren't you then inside? Maybe you need a
key or two, but I don't think there's anything else (I could be wrong...).
The area past the whirlpool is vital to winning the game as this is where
you go to get your attributes raised (you need gold for this, as I recall...).

>3. What are Cards? What are they used for? How do you get them?

The Cards are needed to win the game. They are also obtained beyond the
whirlpool.

Yes, I'm sure lots of people have maps...

There are healing and poison-curing fountains in most dungeons.

   See #2.

   I never did.

These answers are all from the Apple II version. I expect
the two versions to be basically the same.

>1. Where is the "Mark of King"? The "Mark of Force"?
>
There are 4 marks (Mark of Kings, Mark of Force, Mark of Fire,
Mark of (Snakes?)). They are located on the bottom levels of dungeons,
except that the Mark of Kings can be found on level 1 or 2 (I think in
  a dungeon SE of Grey).

If you look around, you'll find 4 temples (also known as shrines).
If you (E)nter one, the computer will ask you which player enters; this
player can get his ability scores raised for 100 gold/point (each shrine
handles a different ability score).

>3. What are Cards? What are they used for? How do you get them?

There are 4 cards; one is hidden in each shrine. You will find them
useful in the endgame.

As far as I know, none of these things can happen within Exodus III.
