I have finished both Zork I and II by Infocom, and have recently started on the VAX version. So far I have run into these problems and would appreciate any assistance : 1) How do you melt the glacier? 2) In the Tea Room, you can distinguish the cakes by their colors ("eat blue cake"), except for the one that makes you small. How do you tell the computer to eat it? 3) What do you do once you get in Hades? 4) How do you open the egg? By the way, I would be happy to give hints to people stuck on the Infocom games. Please send answers (or questions) to me, but specify "Zork" since this is my mother's login. Thanks Jeff Hashfield

Could someone please give me a subtle hint about how to inflate the balloon? And does the jeweled egg have a purpose -- how about a clue as to what it is? Cheers, John

The balloon is a hot-air balloon. Hot air balloons usually have a fire below the balloon heating the air. The jeweled egg can be opened, but it is delicate.

I have played the mainframe version of ZORK off and on for awhile, and would like some hints.... 1) What is supposed to be done with the jeweled egg? Putting it in the trophy case doesn't seem to get many points. Is it related to the chirping bird that is occassionally heard? 2) How do you get past the "wall of shimmering light" in the safe deposit room with the magic vault? 3) How do you get into the entrance of Hades? I carry the "worthless object" from the temple, plus the 2 objects from the altar (with one lit), but still no success - any incantation? 4) How do you get the coffin out of the Egyptian room? Do you get it out by using the balloon found in the volcano? How do you get the balloon to work (I can't get it to move)? 5) Is there a way to turn off the randomness of the round room? 6) After you have shrunk (in tea room) and go to through the crack to the sewage room, is there anything you can do? I don't see the purpose of shrinking. 7) What do the buttons in the Machinery room (round, triangle, square) do? All I get is "thump", "whirring increases"... 8) How do you get the crystal sphere? 9) The rainbow is another puzzler for me. I try digging (with the shovel) at the end of the rainbow, and get nothing. I understand one can make the rainbow solid, how? When one goes down the river in the boat, what does one do at the falls (I've tried the barrel, much to my regret)? 10) Is there a way to recharge the lantern? I tend to run out of light before I'm even halfway done (with the dungeon that I know so far..) I use the various other sources of light, and turn off the lamp when outside, but.... Please just give hints and mild spoilers...I want to try to figure out some of these puzzles! The egg can be opened somehow. Only one with nimble fingers can open such a delicate object without damaging it. > 2) How do you get past the "wall of shimmering light" in the safe > deposit room with the magic vault? "Walk through curtain"? > 3) How do you get into the entrance of Hades? I carry the "worthless > object" from the temple, plus the 2 objects from the altar (with one lit), > but still no success - any incantation? The jeering demons could use a little exorcise. Exorcisms seem to involve lighting candles, reading from prayer books, ringing bells, etc. Worthless object? You must have broken something. > 4) How do you get the coffin out of the Egyptian room? Do you get it out > by using the balloon found in the volcano? How do you get the balloon to > work (I can't get it to move)? There is a way to drag the coffin out. Keep mapping. The balloon works by "board basket", "open cage", put burning object in cage, wait. > 5) Is there a way to turn off the randomness of the round room? Yes, there is a button somewhere. > 6) After you have shrunk (in tea room) and go to through the crack to > the sewage room, is there anything you can do? I don't see the purpose > of shrinking. You need to evaporate the sewage. Have you examined the cakes? You might need a magnifier. > 7) What do the buttons in the Machinery room (round, triangle, square) > do? All I get is "thump", "whirring increases"... See #5, above. > 8) How do you get the crystal sphere? Just take it. Of course, that triggers a trap, but you have just enough time to escape if you can get some help dealing with the trap. > 9) The rainbow is another puzzler for me. I try digging (with the shovel) > at the end of the rainbow, and get nothing. I understand one can make the > rainbow solid, how? When one goes down the river in the boat, what does > one do at the falls (I've tried the barrel, much to my regret)? Wave a wand, sceptre, or something. Forget the falls (Geronimo!). There is a buoy in the river.. > 10) Is there a way to recharge the lantern? I tend to run out of light > before I'm even halfway done (with the dungeon that I know so far..) help... First off, you CAN turn off the randomness in the round or "carousel" room. This is related to the machine with the three buttons. That's all I'll tell ya for now. Just start pushing! There IS a reason to shrink. Move around. As for getting the coffin, and getting into Hades...Never underestimate the power of prayer, and remember the famous saying "Bell, book, and candle". Yes, there is a purpose to the jeweled egg, but you have "neither the tools nor the expertise" to open it. Find someone who DOES. That's all I can remember for now. Hope it helps... I am team-playing zork with a friend and we have several problems. The main one is, of course, the thief. How do you prevent him from robbing you blind? I have tried depositing each treasure as soon as I get it, but on at least one occasion my lamp had burned out and he stole my flaming torch. Which leads to the next question -- where are the spare batteries for the lamp located?? And finally, how do you get the solid gold coffin out of the room and how do you get the platinum bar out of the room that's too loud to think in?? Please reply by mail.
