To download it from "ISIB" you must use the 'tenex' transfer mode. See the sample transfer log below: *tenex <Type L bytesize 32 ok. *get HACK351.ARC.1 hack.tnx <Port 20.87 at host 26.6.0.87 accepted. <Retrieve of <INFO-IBMPC>HACK351.ARC.1 started. 257432 bytes in 339 seconds--6072 bps <Transfer completed. 64358 (32) bytes transferred. * Note that HACK351.ARC.1 was transfered using logical bytesize of 32, not just the binary mode. So you can try this, and see if you have better results. Secondly, I read that the Unix version of ARC was chock full of bugs. The author of Unix ARC (actually the one who attempted to port it to Unix) posted an article to some newsgroup saying not to use it at all, and that work on a good port was progressing (I think). So you should only use ARC under MS-DOS. Thirdly, you need to transfer HACK351.ARC down to your micro correctly. You must use some form of binary transfer (ie: kermit, xmodem, etc). I prefer to use xmodem. There was a pair of xmodem programs for Unix on net.sources some time ago. They were called "sb" and "rb", presumably for send/recieve binary. The mod.sources archives may have them. Finally, if you give up, I can US-mail copies. I posted the message below last week to net.games.hack, and have had quite a bit of response. Note: this service is not done for any profit. The requestor is required to send a disk along with pre-stamping the postage necessary for returning the disk in the SASE package. This is only done to provide those interested but unable to obtain a copy (for whatever reason). -------------------- Standard PC-Hack 3.5.1 Mailer ------------------- Attention: PC-Hack 3.5.1 queries I have received quite a bit of response to my reply to Marcus Ranum regarding the availability of Don Kneller's latest version of PC-Hack, version 3.5.1. For those of you who missed the previous posting, PC-Hack 3.5.1 is an MS-DOS version of Unix Hack 1.03. It will work on most any MS-DOS machine and does have several configurable options specific to the IBM-PC (just to make use of the keypad and faster screen I/O). This is the file HACK351.ARC as found on USC-ISIB. I will _NOT_ send it e-mail as it is still much too long (~300K with ARC). Since there seems to be a fair amount of you wanting a copy of it as seen by my recent flood of e-mail, I am willing to make copies given the following: 1. US Mail to me a standard diskette (double-sided, double-density) along with a self-addressed and pre-stamped mailer-package to return it back to you. You may wish to format the disk, but do not put a system on it. 2. Send me an e-mail message when you have done step 1 above so that I know to be expecting it sometime soon. 3. When I get your disk from the mail, if it is not formatted I will format it (using PC-DOS 2.0 format command) and then copy onto it the following files: ARC512.EXE - latest version of ARC (the archiver) ARC500.DOC - documentation for ARC HACK351.ARC - the PC-Hack 3.5.1 executable & support files in archived form. 4. I will mail this disk back to you in the pre-addressed, pre-stamped mailer. I will also e-mail a reply to you telling you that I have mailed it. 5. When you get it back from me, read the ARC documentation on how to extract the files from HACK351.ARC. If you have any questions on extraction or configuration, I will try to answer them. Please e-mail questions to me. By all means, let's not clutter up net.games.hack with questions about this mailer. Questions should be sent to me via e-mail. My addresses are given below. If for some reason you can't get thru to me via e-mail, you can send questions by US mail, but be sure to include a SASE (that's Self Addressed Stamped Envelope, boyo) if you want a reply. I do not want to have to handle money or checks in this service; that is why I require SASE for all mailings. I will try to be prompt on all returns and replies, but don't blame me if the US mail screws up. I have mailed this set-up to three people so far and have heard that each enjoys this version much more than our previous (v 1.0.1, old I know). I know how badly I wanted to get the new version of PC-Hack, that's why I'm doing this now for all of you hungry Hack-ers out there. Let's keep this simple.
